Zipper Installation + Pockets - Sunday, April 30th 9:30 - 12:30 (3 hr class)
In this advanced finishing course, you'll master these two fabulous techniques: designing your own pockets and no-sew zipper installation. Pockets are such a delightful addition to a sweater! In this course you will learn how to add pockets to an existing design, whether it is top-down or bottom-up. We will go through each feature one at a time, outlining the set-up, how to work the piece, and any required finishing. Instructions for four different pattern styles will be taught along with considerations including: Placement Size Dimensions Proportions to garment Conquer your zipper fears! You don't need a sewing machine or even a needle & thread to install a zipper in your handknits. This technique turns your zipper into a knittable object for a stunning and impeccable finish. Knitters should bring a pattern of their choice that they would like to modify for one or both of these techniques–planning ahead of time gives you all the options! Finished sweaters / WIPs are also welcome as many options can also be worked after you've bound off. Don’t know where to start? Check out Gramps Cardigan, Sunday Crew (wouldn’t a kangaroo pocket and even a hood make this sweater even more cozy?) or Flutter. Knitting for a child? Might I suggest Ryan Cardigan, which is friendly to side pocket styles, Henry Cardigan even more basic for side pockets additions, or Diplodocus for a kangaroo style pocket). Homework Students will receive their homework assignment 2 weeks prior to the class; getting a few swatches ready ahead of time will maximize our class time in practicing the techniques themselves. Required Skills -cast on -knitting & purling -basic increasing & decreasing -picking up stitches -this course is perfectly suitable for beginning knitters.
